The role

The Sir George at Jugiong needs a casual chef for the summer season: from October 2026 through to Anzac Day, 25 April 2027. It is a high-volume pub kitchen. More than 400 seats when the weather is good, functions and dining from November, Easter the last big rush, and a Sunday can mean 120 pies. You’d work the line under the executive chef and head chef, cooking pub classics to a high standard at volume.

The kitchen is new: four Rational combi ovens, sous vide and cryovac, a charcoal oven, a bread mixer on the way. The cooking is built on local produce.

What’s on offer

  • Casual, paid by Hospitality Award grade with penalties on top. From $39.13 an hour casual at Level 5 (demi chef) and $40.16 at Level 6 (chef de partie), as at 1 July 2026, plus weekend and public holiday rates and 12% superannuation. The award is the floor; the rate is agreed with the pub on offer.
  • A private room in staff housing, $150 a week.
  • The season runs to 25 April 2027. Start in October.
  • Working holiday makers are welcome for the season. Jugiong does not count toward the 88 days of specified work for a second-year visa.

Who this is for

A chef with high-volume experience and no ego about it: someone who puts out pub classics at a high standard on a 400-cover day, keeps a clean section, and turns up the same way on a Tuesday as on a Saturday.

You’ll need:

  • Trade qualification or the equivalent experience, at demi chef or chef de partie level.
  • The right to work in Australia for the length of the season.
  • A car helps. The nearest towns are about 40 km away, and staff without one carpool on days off.

The pub

The Sir George is a restored 1850s pub on the Murrumbidgee at Jugiong, just off the Hume Highway, with luxury rooms in the old stone stables and barns, a bar, a beer garden and function spaces. Gundagai, Cootamundra and Harden are about 40 km away; Canberra and Wagga Wagga about 120 km.
